Featured Supporter: McMillen Family Foundation

Our mission at Heartland House is to serve men recovering from substance use disorder and related co-occurring conditions. Our goals are to provide a living environment conducive to continued recovery, conduct an educational program that helps the newly recovering alcoholic/addict establish a long-term support system, and to generate attitudes that enhance self-sufficiency, self-worth and an ongoing quality of life.

Heartland House receives funding for our programs from a variety of sources that include the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency, Division of Behavioral Health; the Veterans Administration, private payers, agencies, and other federal and state agencies. Additional funding comes from the tax-deductible contributions of private individuals and organizations.

One of our most benevolent private contributors is the McMillen Family Foundation, whose remarkable generosity has funded vital capital projects at our facility. Most recently we received a grant from the McMillen Family Foundation for the refurbishment of our newly purchased property to be used for Sober Living opened 2018 and 2019. The grant covered the refurbishment of our kitchen, patio, grounds, bathroom, and bedroom.

About the McMillen Family Foundation

The McMillen Family Foundation serves Southern California by supporting non-profit organizations that address drug and alcohol dependency and continually seeking new avenues for making a difference in the lives of substance abuse sufferers.

The McMillen Family Foundation was founded by Karl and Carol McMillen in 2008, and in those 11 years they have donated over $12 million to numerous charities and foundations that “demonstrate sound fiscal management, efficient operation, and program integrity”.

Here, in their words, is the McMillen Family Foundation story:

“The McMillen Family built a very successful wholesale plumbing supply business consisting of nine highly respected facilities located in California and Nevada. That success was the result of hard work, honesty, integrity and a respect for both customers and employees.

Those same values will guide the McMillen Family Foundation in providing support to nonprofit groups and agencies dedicated to improving the lives of those in need.

The mission of the McMillen Family Foundation is to provide assistance to eligible groups in Southern California which are dedicated to helping people of all ages who have been impacted, directly or indirectly, by alcohol and/or drugs and to provide community outreach and education to prevent alcohol and/or drug addiction before it starts.

We will give priority in funding to those nonprofits with a proven track record that share our values and produce tangible and measurable results consistent with our mission.

Our goal is to become the very best in grantmaking to support nonprofit groups and agencies dedicated to improving the lives of those in need.”

Heartland House is truly honored to have met the exacting standards of the McMillen Family Foundation, and immeasurably grateful to a benefactor without whom our programs would not be possible.

Thank you, McMillen Family Foundation, for your boundless, civic-minded generosity!
