September is National Recovery Month!

Did you know that September is National Recovery Month? This awareness campaign was created to ‘educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.’ (Reference)

History

National Recovery Month began back in 1989, titled then as Treatment Works! Month. Initially, this movement celebrated the work of professionals in the field who were making advancements toward the treatment of these disorders. In 1998, the name was changed to National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, and the message was changed to celebrate those who have recovered and gotten their lives back.

The celebration has evolved over the years, and now in its 27th year, National Recovery Month celebrates millions who have shared the incredible journey to recovery. A chief aim of National Recovery Month is to bring awareness that treatment does work, and encourage all members of society to help improve and expand the availability of prevention, treatment, and recovery programs.

Theme

The theme for National Recovery Month 2017 is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities. The 2017 theme highlights the value of family and community support throughout recovery and invites individuals in recovery and their family members to share their personal stories and successes in order to encourage others.” (www.recoverymonth.gov).

Heartland house aims to help men in recovery and their families as well as raise awareness in the community about substance use disorder, so this year’s theme for National Recovery Month goes hand-in-hand with our mission. Over the coming months, we will reach out with information to help you find out how you can get involved in National Recovery Month. Thousands of organizations participate in National Recovery Month every year in a variety of ways that include hosting events, executing information campaigns and raising money for charities. Please stay tuned to our blog and News section.
